The William Cole Cup

16th November 2018

On Monday 12th November, we welcomed four schools to Stover for our annual William Cole Cup Tournament. Shebbear College, Plymouth College, St John’s School and Coombeshead Academy joined us for this year’s competition. With some tight fixtures against each school already this year it was sure to be a tough but exciting afternoon of rugby. Each team played each other once in a round robin format, 3 points for a win, 1 for a draw and 0 for a loss. The games were incredibly competitive throughout the afternoon, two teams finishing the tournament unbeaten. The results were as follows:

Round 1

St Johns 10 v 10 Shebbear

Stover A 20 v 5 Coombeshead

Stover B 0 v 65 Plymouth College

Round 2

Stover B 0 v 55 St Johns

Stover A 5 V 5 Shebbear

Coombeshead 5 v 20 Plymouth College

Round 3

Coombeshead 65 v 0 Stover B

Shebbear 15 v 15 Plymouth College

Stover A 15 v 10 St Johns

Round 4

Stover B 0 v 45 Shebbear

St Johns 30 v 15 Coombeshead

Stover A 20 v 15 Plymouth College

Round 5

Stover A 35 v 0 Stover B

Coombeshead 10 v 15 Shebbear

St Johns 50 v 15 Plymouth College

So after an incredible afternoon of rugby and several games being tied or settled by just one try the final table looked as follows:

Stover A- 13 points (4 wins, 1 draw)

St Johns- 10 points (3 wins, 1 draw, 1 loss)

Shebbear- 9 points (2 wins, 3 draws)

Plymouth College- 7 points (2wins, 1 draw, 2 losses)

Coombeshead- 3 points (1 win, 5 losses)

Stover B- 0 points (6 losses)

So a fantastic afternoon topped off with the Stover A team winning the William Cole Cup for the first time in 5 years, a fantastic effort and well deserved. Congratulations also to the Stover B team who had a tough afternoon, not winning any games but each and everyone one of them gave 100%, gained a lot of experience and learnt a great deal. Special mention must go to Year 7 Claude who impressed nearly everyone with several members of staff from others schools commenting on how well he played in a Stover A team. Another mention must go to Joseph, Year 7, and Lhamo, Year 8, who never gave in, making some exceptional tackles throughout the afternoon for the Stover B team.

Where to next?
