Year 9 Outdoor Education Residential, Wednesday6th – Friday 8th October 2021
The Outdoor Pursuits Residential for Year 9, 2021-22, will comprise a 3 day/2 night stay on Dartmoor. This has been designed both to build on the skills and learning which the pupils enjoyed on previous Outdoor Pursuits Programmes and to introduce them to the skills and experiences involved in The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme and Ten Tors, both of which pupils may apply for in Year 9.
This outdoor programme will be led by ‘Young Spirit’, a subsidiary of ‘Spirit of Adventure’ who are specialists in adventure education offering multi-activity courses and holidays on Dartmoor and who work with the school across both the prep and senior school. They have a well-established reputation for providing truly memorable outdoor experiences for young people with an equal emphasis on fun and learning, during an intense mix of activity and challenge including a strong focus on teamwork.
The trip will be led from Stover by Mr Forsyth who has responsibility for Outdoor Pursuits, accompanied by the Year 9 tutors.
Accommodation will be split between Young Spirit’s Dewerstone Cottage venue, located in beautiful woodland on the south-west edge of the Moor near Cadover Bridge and the Powdermills bunk house near Postbridge. Both venues have wood burning stoves, drying rooms, armchairs and sofas; there is hot and cold running water and excellent showers as well as fully-equipped kitchens.
Pupils will spend one night sleeping in shared, single-sex rooms and the other camping ‘in the wild’ in 3-man tents. Over the 3 days one day will focus on navigation, walking, camp-craft and outdoor cooking; another on climbing and abseiling and other team challenges, and the third on team and personal challenges including pioneering, constructing a river crossing and other skills from previous residentials. Teams and individuals will have time to review and reflect on their performances.
