Year 5 Trip to St Nicholas Priory
Stover Pupils Spend a Day as Tutors at the Priory
Stover Preparatory Schools Year 5 girls and boys recently visited St Nicholas Priory in Exeter and all dressed as Tudors to complete their spring term topic on the Tudors. The Stover pupils were greeted by the "Tudor" staff, who kept up the act of being members of the original Tudor household all day.
The Stover pupils prepared their own Tudor lunch of pottage, a soup made from spinach, spring onions parsley, oats, spices and broth. They also made a pudding called marchpan, made from almonds, rose water and sugar.
The pupils ate their Tudor feast of pottage , rolls, cheese, cold chicken, apples and apple juice, eating from pewter bowls and spoons and a bread board, having learnt the Grace and particular Tudor table manners.
Later in the day they performed a "Pavanne", Tudor dance for "Lady Mary". St Nicholas Priory is set out as it would have been in Tudor times, with a fully reconstructed Tudor kitchen and chambers (or bedrooms). Stover pupils had to prove that they were the Better Sort, through their behaviour.
It was a really educational and enjoyable day! For more information on Stover Preparatory School please contact the Registrar at
