What Else do the Examinations do?

They act as a guide for the school in order to accurately place pupils into sets for English, Mathematics and French.  The achievement scores are passed to Heads of Departments each September so that pupils receive the correct level of teaching in the core subjects.

At What Age do Examinations Take Place?

Scholarship examinations are held at the following ages:-

  • 10+  for transfer and entry into Year 6 in the senior school; pupils must be under 11 on the 1st September
  • 11+  for entry into Year 7 in the senior school; pupils must be under 12 on the 1st September
  • 13+  for entry into Year 9 in the senior school; pupils must be under 14 on the 1st September
  • 15+  for entry into Year 10 in the senior school; pupils must be under 15 on the 1st September
  • 16+  for entry into Sixth Form (Year 12)

This is our general policy but we will always retain flexibility in individual cases.  Scholarships and bursaries are only available in the senior school.

Can a Student try again?

Pupils can sit the scholarship examinations again at 11+ , 13+ and 15+, any improvement may result in a higher award.   All pupils wishing to join Stover Sixth Form may take the 16+ Scholarship Examinations.

What are the Awards Worth?

The value of a scholarship award varies between 10% and 25% of basic school fees (excluding extra charges).  Means-tested Scholarships and Bursaries are available in the senior school; please contact the Bursar for more information.

How Long do the Awards Last?

Scholarships awarded at 10+ and 11+ continue until the end of Year 8, at which point they are reviewed.  The school will contact parents if they have concerns, otherwise scholarships will continue to the end of the GCSE course (Year 11).  13+ & 15+ awards continue until the end of the GCSE course (Year 11).  Sixth Form Scholarships continue until the end of the A Level course (Year 13).

Can Internal Pupils Apply for Scholarships?

Yes, internal pupils can apply for scholarships, at 10+, 11+, 13+.  For all scholarships parents should discuss this application initially with either the Prep School Head (10+) or Senior Teacher Assessment (11+, 13+).  Sixth Form Scholarships should be discussed initially with the Head of Sixth Form. Pupils will need to apply to the Registrar by the appropriate dates.

How is Information Communicated to Parents?

Once marked, a review panel analyses the scholarship assessments and letters of offer, as appropriate, are sent to parents within two weeks of the examinations.  The school's decision is binding; no further correspondence will be entered into.

Where do the Scholarship Examinations take place?

The examinations take place at Stover School. Pupils spend the day at Stover, giving the pupils an opportunity to meet their peers and staff and become familiar with the school campus.  If pupils are not able to take the examinations on this day, arrangements can be made for them to sit the examinations at their current school or at another time.  As part of the examination day, pupils may spend a night at Stover in the boarding house.  10+, 11+ and 13+ examinations take place during the school week in January and Sixth Form scholarship examinations take place on a Saturday early in February.

Will External Candidates require Further Information?

Stover will require a copy of a recent school report for all external pupils taking scholarship examinations and may contact the pupil's current school for a confidential report.  Any other relevant information that may enhance a pupil's chance of a scholarship (musical/sport achievements, art portfolio) may be included with their application.

How do Pupils Apply?

All pupils wishing to sit a scholarship examination must be registered with Stover School.  Applications for scholarship awards at 10+, 11+ and 13+ must be with the Registrar by the end of the Autumn Term.  Sixth Form scholarship applications must be returned two weeks prior to scholarship date. For more information please contact the Registrar.
