English as a Foreign Language

English as an Additional Language

(English as a Foreign Language)

This is for pupils whose mother tongue is not English. All four skills - reading, writing, listening and speaking are studied.

The main aims are to improve vocabulary and grammar in order for pupils to communicate successfully in both the written and spoken word, enabling access to the rest of the curriculum; and the successful completion of the IGCSE English as a Second Language course at the end of Year 11.

There may be an opportunity for pupils to sit the Cambridge Preliminary English Test in Year 10, if they wish.

IGCSE English as a Second Language is a recognised qualification for university entrance in the UK.

Pupils in Years 12 and 13 are prepared for the internationally recognised IELTS examinations, as required for university entrance – as well as continuing with work on general proficiency in English which helps integration and access to the curriculums of other A Level subjects.
