Our Curriculum

The primary objective of First Steps Nursery is to provide high quality education for children aged 3 years to 4+ years in a safe, secure, happy and stimulating environment.

Whilst in our charge, children are given opportunities to participate in a wide variety of play experiences that enable them to develop the skills needed to become increasingly independent, with a positive self-image and an understanding of their fellow beings.

At First Steps Nursery when planning and implementing the curriculum for the children in our care, we consider the following principles:

  • Every child is a unique individual with specific rights
  • All children have skills and abilities that they bring with them and we can build on
  • What they can do, not what they cannot do, should be the starting point of their education
  • Children have a right to develop physically, socially, emotionally, intellectually and morally to their full potential.
  • Children learn through first hand experience, using their senses to develop an understanding of the world
  • Learning is holistic for young children
  • Children need opportunity and space to explore their environment
  • Play is central to the child’s learning process
  • Shared information between family and nursery is crucial
  • Creating an enabling environment is key to successful learning

Through observation and assessment each child’s strengths, interests and needs are taken into account in order to plan a balanced curriculum. Parents are encouraged to share information about their child and to be part of the planning and monitoring process.

The Nursery curriculum is based on the Early Years Foundation Stage Framework.

The areas of learning and development consist of three prime areas and four specific areas.

Personal,Social and Emotional Development
Physical Development
Communication and Language

Specific areas

A Quote from Stover

My best days are the ones where we go out with our wellingtons on and kick the leaves. Sometimes we go on an adventure and we take a picnic and sometimes we get muddy!
